   It’s 2018, and everyone is going on about how this is their year. One of the most common New Year resolutions is to start working out and get that summer body that everybody dreams about. I’m here to tell you how to start your fitness journey and to keep going.

   I want to start by saying that I’m not a very active person. I’m a cheerleader, but during off-season I’m super lazy, and I pretty much eat anything I want. This year I’m changing that. I have to form good habits before I move away to college, and this is where I’m going to start.

   The first thing I recommend when starting your fitness journey is joining a gym you feel most comfortable in. You don’t want to pay to go to a place if you feel uncomfortable or judged because it’ll just make you uncomfortable and you won’t have motivation to work out. When you go to the gym take advantage of all the resources they have that can benefit you.

   “Take advantage of the personal trainer.  They can get you started in the right direction and make you feel comfortable with the equipment.  If the gym offers fitness classes, take them!  Try everything- to work different muscles and keep it exciting, “ said Amanda Mattei, Health teacher.

   The next step is to choose exactly what you want you work on. I personally wanted to tone my muscles and work on my endurance. Picking out what you want to work on can help you make a workout plan to stick to. The pattern will help you keep up with your workouts.

   After you have your gym picked out, and you know what you want  to work on it’s time to make a work out plan to achieve your goals.  For my endurance, I do 30 minutes of cardio, and to tone I spend the second half of my workouts doing weights. I also alternate focusing on my legs and arms.

   Just a minor note, always sanitize the equipment when you’re done. When you work out you sweat and that gets everywhere. The last thing you would ever want is to touch sweaty equipment that someone else used, so please be courteous.

   When working out track your progress. I can’t stress this enough. You always want to track your progress so you can figure out what works for you and what doesn’t work for you. The progress also keeps you motivated. When you see your work paying off it definitely motivates you want to keep going to the gym.

   Along with working out you have to change your eating habits into good ones. If you work out, but you’re still eating Big Mac’s everyday you won’t see results. I had a bad habit of skipping breakfast and and eating a huge lunch that was full of snacks. I decided to start eating oatmeal for breakfast and  have a meal for lunch and dinner. The important thing to remember is that snacks are allowed!! Starving yourself is not healthy at all if you’re hungry eat! Snacks like  fruit or a granola bar are always good options. If you have a sweet tooth like me candy once in a while is okay, but Starburst everyday for a snack is not going to work in your favor. Moderation is always key.

   “Make small changes. You won’t stick to your new plan if its entirely different to what you’re used to,” said Mattei.

   All this information may be very overwhelming and a lot to take in but this new step in your life will only be as fun as you make it. Involving friends and family in your workouts can always make them more enjoyable for everyone.

   “Consider joining a social networking site or online community with fitness trainers and nutrition experts — and support from other people trying to lose weight and maintain healthy eating and exercise routines. People who get this kind of online support are proven to lose up to three times more weight than people going it alone,” (www.gaiam.com).

   While you’re embarking on this journey to a healthy you, remember that being healthy involves taking care of your entire body.
