Imagine this; you’re on your bed casually scrolling through your newsfeed and you see a video of a delicious steak, or how to make the infamous Japanese Jiggly cheesecake. This is how I became addicted to Tasty videos. Tasty is a cooking channel on YouTube run by Buzzfeed. It’s a collection of videos that show you how to cook different foods, for different things. There’s recipes for vegetarians, there’s recipes for dorm rooms, there’s even a video for different ways to make pasta. After a few months of watching these videos and wondering what they taste like, I figured I had to make at least one recipe. So, I set off to make the perfect Tasty recipe and see if it really tastes as good as it looks.

To find out if tasty is really tasty I decided to make a meal with foods I saw on different videos that would taste good together.

Before I explain how this process went, I want to start off by saying I know how to cook. I can fry chicken, I can make a steak dinner,I can make and decorate cakes, all  I’m trying to say is my cooking skills are average/intermediate, and Tasty videos make everything seem so easy so I thought it would be easy for me as well.

As I was shopping for ingredients for this project I decided to make an Italian dinner. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a Video made specifically for an Italian dinner so i just took different foods from different videos and made a full course meal, including dessert.

The first thing I attempted to replicate was an eggplant roll-up. This is a slice of eggplant rolled up with a cheese mixture that you put in the middle. Sounds easy enough right? Well, it was actually a lot harder than I thought it would be. I’ve never cooked with eggplant before , so why did  I decided to try it out now? I don’t know.  My first mistake was cutting the eggplant too thick. In order to successfully roll up the eggplant it has to be fairly thin to maintain flexibility, but my slices were really thick so rolling them up was a lot harder than it should’ve been. But, the question at hand right now is “ Did it taste good?” Yes, it was actually really delicious. Even though it didn’t look like the picture the taste was amazing. The cheese mixture was the perfect combination of creamy and gooey, and when you cut into it the cheese stretched for inches and inches and inches. I paired the eggplant with some spaghetti pasta, which was not part of the original recipe, but I had to add something to the meal since it was too small.

The second thing I made to go with my eggplant roll-up pasta was some garlic bread. When I think Italian food, one of the first things that pops into my head is bread. I found the Garlic bread recipe in another video separate from the one eggplant one. I just picked it out specifically because I thought it would compliment the dinner. This was fairly easy to make. You just cut some french bread in half and spread this cheesy, buttery, garlic sauce on top and put it in the oven until the cheese melts and the crust of the bread is nice and crunchy. This was hit with my family! I started everyone off with 2 pieces of bread  and by the end of the meal the entire loaf was gone.

Last but not least I made dessert. I was so tired from figuring out how to make the roll- ups that I decided to go with a simple dessert out of things I already had in the house. I made oreo truffle balls! These truffles were so delicious I couldn’t believe how easy it was to make them. Following the video was easy, and they’re a no bake recipe so they were prepared very quickly. The only thing about the truffles is that they’re really rich and sweet so everyone only ate 3. I also used the extra for my school bake sale and they sold out on the first day.

Yes, Tasty is tasty! The food is delicious. I just recommend that you take your time with the recipes. The videos are made to make everything seem simple, but not everything is as easy as it seems. And, don’t be scared to put your own little spin on things like I did with the spaghetti noodles. It’s more fun that way. I’m definitely going to try this again, and I recommend it for everyone. The food was fun to make and it tastes good what more could you ask for?
